Southern Seven Health Department serving the southern seven counties of Illinois

Some of the most important services provided by Southern Seven Health Department include health information, health education, and health promotion.  Whether a one time presentation or a two day workshop, the intent is to reduce health risk and promote better health of all ages and groups.  Health information, health education, and health promotion is done through partnerships with schools, worksites, agencies, and person's in community settings.  Southern Seven supports programming toward meeting goals for Healthy People 2010.

Public health knowledge is so vital in today's world.  While many people understand how the decisions they make affect their health, many others are still learning how to make healthier choices.  For example,  chronic disease has some risk factors, which are beyond one's control like family history, race, and age.  There are also risk factors within one's control; what you eat, how active you are, and whether or not you smoke or expose yourself to secondhand smoke.  Southern Seven Health Department seeks programs, which are directly linked to best practice and which can improve health and reduce health risk.  Following are areas of programming offered in Health Education.

Adolescent Health / Teen Pregnancy Prevention - The Adolescent Health Teen Pregnancy Prevention program offers Abstinence based Sexuality Education, Youth Development, and Public Awareness.  Teen Pregnancy Prevention curriculum and services are geared for adolescent girls and boys ages 10 - 16 or grades 5 through 12.  Curriculum uses different approaches in its effort to reduce first time teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted disease, and HIV/AIDS.  Youth Development programming is intended to improve teen's skills in building self esteem, resolving conflict, increasing positive health choices, and increasing access to health services.  Southern Seven collaborates with schools and communities in improving the school's role of pregnancy prevention education and services.  We also partner with communities in completing assessments and gathering data.  Education in this area can be provided to youth, school personnel, parents and/or peer educators.
